2013-14 RHRA Ringette Season is underway
Submitted By Scott Thompson on Thursday, October 24, 2013
The Richmond Hill Ringette Association (RHRA) kicked off its 33rd season of play with several Richmond Hill teams seeing action.  The RHRA has come a long way since that inaugural season and only two teams.  Today the Association is comprised of several Provincial, and Regional teams competing against teams from many communities across Ontario.

Growth of Ringette in Richmond Hill has more than doubled in recent years from approximately 100 players in 2006 to over 250 players in 2013.  The upcoming season marks the first time that the RHRA will have a team at every Provincial level of play (AA & A) for every age group.

The RHRA has become one of the largest associations within the Province of Ontario where the Invitational Tournament they hosted this past February drew in 60 teams and over 2000 visitors to Richmond Hill from communities across Ontario, Quebec and as far away as Nova Scotia.

In starting this year’s campaign over the Oct 18-20 weekend, both U10 teams got out of the gate quickly with the U10-Lee team posting a 5-0 win over Newmarket while the U10-Harling team posted wins over Markham 7-2 and Sunderland 5-0.

In U12 Provincial play, the U12P-Zanon team suffered a 13-0 loss in their first ever Provincial level league game against an established Mississauga team that is one of the best U12 teams in the Province.  Putting that first game experience behind them, the team played a much better game in a 3-1 loss to the Burlington Blast where play was balanced with equal scoring opportunities.  Becky Schuetze played a strong game in goal with Joely Sosnovich Raphael setting up Madeline Angaran for the lone Lightning goal.  The U12P-West team threw up a defensive triangle that limited the Ajax Shooting Stars chances to score while their offence got it done at the other end cruising to a 6-1 win.  Leading the way was Haley Wickens with 2 goals and 2 assists; Maanasa Guda with 2 goals; Camilla Kernohan and Haleigh Beam a goal each; with Sydney Stabler assisting twice and Bryanna Lee once.

In U14 action, the U14AA Lightning started strong by posting wins over the Elora-Fergus Edge 9-3 and the Ajax Shooting Stars 8-3.  The U14A-West team tamed the Whitby Wild 7-1 with a strong offensive performance from Kate Vandeloo and Julia Roman netting 2 goals and an assist each while Kyra Smelser, Julia West and Kara Cseh chipped in with a goal and an assist each.  The U14A-Thompson team had a good showing in their first ever foray at the Provincial level by giving the Oshawa Storm all they could handle before finally succumbing to a 5-3 decision.  The U14B-Edward team came up short against the Markham Bears 4-1.

In U16 play, the U16AA team did not get the start they wanted when they took a depleted bench (4 players unavailable) on the road to Mississauga where they managed to come away with a 4-4 tie thanks to a hat trick by Shelby Byers with Brooklyn Kassermelli chipping in the other marker.  The team came home and played a well fought game against a strong London Lynx team before falling 3-1 where Kassermelli got the lone goal for the Lightning.  Playing their 3rd game in 36 hours, the team fell short again, this time against the Waterloo Wildfire 4-2.  In other U16 action, the U16A team came away with a 3-2 win over the Newmarket Rays while the U16B team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Pickering Shooting Stars.

In U19 action, the U19AA team started the season on a losing note dropping both ends of a home-and-home series against the Guelph Predators 7-1 (away) and 6-4 (home) before bouncing back with wins over the London Lynx 7-4 and a first ever win over the St Clements Comets 8-7.  The U19A team bested the Markham Bears 3-1.
