Ringette AAA Challenge Cup Tournament Recap
Submitted By Scott Thompson on Friday, November 29, 2013
The first leg of three Ontario Ringette Association AAA Challenge Cup events took place on the weekend of October 27-29 with the Eastern Region team dominating the fiercely competitive tournament.  Going undefeated throughout the tournament, the team posted a 6-1 decision over a strong Central Region Team whose only loss during the round robin portion of the tournament came at the hands of the same Eastern team.

The Southern Region Team, which comprised of several Richmond Hill and area players, had difficulty finding their game in dropping their first 2 games against tournament favourites Western (7-0) and Eastern (7-3) Region teams before posting a 10-3 win over the Northeast Region.  Southern_Bench_edited.JPGThey followed with a solid effort against eventual finalists, Central Region, and held the lead late in the game but had to settle for a 7-7 tie before losing their final game against United 6-3 to close out the tournament with a 1-3-1 record.

The next leg of the AAA Challenge Cup will be hosted by the Sudbury Ringette Association the weekend of Nov 29 to Dec 1 with the third leg hosted by the St Mary’s Ringette Association the weekend of Jan 17-19, 2014.

The Challenge Cup tournaments provide opportunities for these elite players to learn how to compete at this level with a focus on how to manage their time, energy level, nutrition and daily rhythms while spending a weekend with each other in an intense environment in preparation for the Ontario Winter Games being hosted by Muskoka Region in Bala, Ontario Feb 27 to Mar 2, 2014.

From the 100 or so players in the AAA program, about 18 will be chosen to be part of Team Ontario next year, and compete in inter-provincial challenge cups and the Canada Winter Games in Prince George BC in 2015. The AAA Challenge Cups are also an opportunity for Team Ontario coaching staff to scout these players as part of the Team Ontario selection process.
