Silver Streak for U12-Chamandy team
Submitted By Scott Thompson on Tuesday, February 10, 2015
The U12-Chamandy team became silver medalists for the second week in a row when they participated in an Ajax-Pickering tournament. Following up on their performance in the Richmond Hill tournament the previous week, the Lightning went undefeated during round robin play posting the lowest goals against with wins over Markham 8-1, Pickering 9-2, and Sudbury 6-2.

The gold medal final pitted the Lightning against another undefeated team from Valley East, where the Lightning couldn't get enough shots past the Valley East goalie and her butterfly style. In the first period, Serena Saltarelli netted a pair of goals for the Lightning; however Valley East managed to pepper lightning goaltender, Emma DiPietro with several wicked wrist shots to take a 2 goal lead at the half. Madeline Angaran and Lauren Hood scored in the second half for the Lightning but it just wasn't enough to take home the gold as Valley East went on to win 7-4. An outstanding team effort by all the girls in their 3rd tournament of the year to bring home their 3rd medal!

Playing in the same tournament, the U14AA-Roman team earned a berth in the gold medal final by posting a 2 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie record in round robin action. The final was a rematch against the league leading London Lynx who defeated the Lightning 6-5 during round robin play. The Lighting again fell short in a close 5-4 decision in taking home the silver medal.

The U19AA-Sandercock team had everything going for them in their first two games of the tournament from the net on out. In the opener, Sarah Ritchie backstopped the Lightning to a 9-4 win over Pickering with strong defence from Taylor Hobson, Jordan Koop, Mackenzie Shaver, and Jamie Zanon. Mackenzie Craig, Madison Sandercock, Brienne Paterson, and Brooklyn Kassermelli each had a pair of goals with Sarah Esmail netting the other. Their second game required another stellar goaltending performance, this time by Alexa Christopoulos who stopped 34 out of 36 shots to secure a 6-2 win in an important ranking game over London. Brienne Paterson and Clare Palmer scored a pair of goals each, with Sarah Esmail and Mackenzie Craig rounding out the scoring. A win in their next game would have assured the team 5th place in the final provincial standings, however St. Clements spoiled the opportunity by downing the Lightning 7-5. In their final round robin game, Lac St. Louis proved to be the better team on the ice in a 7-2 victory to eliminate the Lightning’s chances of advancing to the medal match. On a positive note, the Lightning’s Mackenzie Craig and Assistant Coach, Melissa Simone will be joining Team Ontario in the upcoming Canada Winter Games.

In other Ringette action, the Open B-Todd team downed Newmarket 7-4, thanks to a 5 point night from Cassie Moscoe who had a hat trick and two assists. The U9-Applebaum team played a hard fought battle against Oshawa in dropping a 7-4 decision. Isabel Ianni kept the score respectable, stopping shot after shot in net. Sabah Esmail had the hat trick, and Aaliyah Natsheh netted the other on a terrific set up from Hannah Weaver and Carlyn Joy.  The U10-Harling team won a pair of road games edging Mississauga 7-6 before travelling to Paris where they put a solid team effort together in a 5-1 victory. The U10-Laughlin team dropped a 10-5 decision to the Whitby Wild.

The U12-Mews team relied on great passing by the defence in moving the ring out of their zone en route to a 7-3 victory over Newmarket. The U12P-Ianni offense was unstoppable in a 10-0 win over Whitby, however the offense couldn’t get untracked the following day in dropping a 2-1 decision to Guelph. The U14A-West team dropped a 4-1 decision to St Catherine’s while the U14B-Giordan team was bested by Whitby 11-6 and Sunderland 6-1.

The U16A-McKnight team tamed the Mississauga Mustangs 3-1 while the U16AA-Sarjeant team dropped a 5-2 decision to Waterloo. The U16B-Thompson team won both ends of a home-and-away series with Oshawa. The Lightning took a 7-3 decision at home thanks to a hat trick by Kylie Thompson and a pair of goals from Danielle Pelletier with singles from Alessandra Tuzi and Amy Thompson. In Oshawa, Erica Siow earned the shutout as the Lightning took the return match 3-0.
