Lightning strike gold in Ayr and Newmarket
Submitted By Scott Thompson on Monday, February 16, 2015
Richmond Hill’s U14A-West Lightning team struck gold after going a perfect 6-0 at the Tournament of Hearts in Ayr, Ontario. After netting an average of five goals per game to lead the division in scoring during round robin play, the Lightning found success a little tougher in the playoffs.

After getting past Elora-Fergus 3-1 in a semi-final, the Lightning faced a strong Waterloo team who sported the second best goals per game during round robin action (one goal behind the Lightning).  Both teams came up with their best defensive efforts with the Lightning prevailing in a narrow 2-1 victory and the gold medal.

Four more medals for Lightning teams

There were five Richmond Hill teams playing in Newmarket’s “Ignite the Ice” tournament with four Lightning teams bringing home medals.  The U16A-McKnight team brought home gold when Charlotte Thorpe scored with less than five minutes to play in the final against Markham. The winning goal coming just 33 seconds after Markham had come back from a 2-0 deficit to knot the score at 2.  In the U14B division, the Lightning’s Giordan team advanced to the final against a strong team from London.  Having lost to London 8-1 during round robin action, the Lightning tightened up defensively in the final but couldn’t get the offense going. London skated to a 2-0 victory to relegate the Lightning as silver medalists.  The final of the U16AA division pitted a high scoring Mississauga team against the Lightning’s Sarjeant team who sported the lowest goals against after round robin play.  The Lightning carried a 1-0 lead into the final frame on a goal by Jada Laliberte; however Mississauga exploded for three goals midway through the final frame before Nicole Cannata added a late Lightning marker to make it close. Mississauga held on for the 3-2 win and relegates another Lightning team as silver medalists. In the Open-B division, the Lightning’s Todd team advanced to the final to face a strong team from Halton that dominated the division by scoring seven or more goals per contest, including a 7-0 decision over the Lightning during round robin play.  In the final, Halton jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the game was six minutes old. The Lightning tightened up defensively after that but were unable to generate any offense losing 4-0 and sending another Lightning team home as silver medalists.  The U19A-File team took their 2-1-1 record into a semi final match against an Exeter-Seaforth team that led the division in both scoring (21) and goals against (3) in four round robin games. The Lightning was eliminated from medal play by the eventual gold medalists 4-0.

In other Ringette action, the U10-Harling team outgunned the Mississauga Mustangs 9-8 and the Markham Bears 8-3 in a pair of home games.  The U12 Whitby Wild came to town for games against the Lightning’s U12-Mew’s and U12-Chamandy teams, leaving town with victories in both contests 4-1 and 3-1 respectively. The U12P-Ianni team travelled to Cambridge for a tilt with the Turbos and skated away with a 4-1 victory.  In the first of two weekend games, the U16B-Thompson team ran into penalty trouble against the Pickering Shooting Stars, playing 2 players short on 3 separate occasions. The Lightning still managed to gain a 3-3 tie thanks to some stellar goaltending from Erica Siow and timely goals from Rachel Angaran, Serena Perera and Alessandra Tuzi.  In their second weekend game, the Lightning went on a goal scoring spree in defeating Markham 9-1.  Danielle Pelletier wielded the hot stick netting four goals; Amy Thompson added a pair, with singles from Grace Dutra, Serena Perera and Alessandra Tuzi.  Erica Siow was again strong in net.
