Two Gold and Three Silver medals for Lightning teams at OCRRL Championships
Submitted By Scott Thompson on Monday, March 30, 2015
Another great showing for Richmond Hill Lightning teams as five of the seven entries came home with medals from the Ontario Central Region Ringette League (OCRRL) Championships held in Pickering March 26-29.

The Lightning’s U10-Harling team won gold when they went undefeated during the tournament play by averaging 10+ goals a game.  The team opened the tournament with a 9-3 victory over Barrie, but found a much tougher opponent in their Richmond Hill counterparts, the U10-Laughlin squad, who they defeated 6-2 before finishing round robin play with a 14-6 win over Pickering. Facing Mississauga in the final, the Harling team kept the offense in high gear skating to a 12-6 win and the gold medal.

In U12 action, it was guaranteed gold …and silver, for Richmond Hill as it was an all Lightning final when the Mews team faced off against the Chamandy team. The Mews team was looking to avenge their only loss (4-3) during round robin play while the Chamandy team was looking to keep their undefeated record intact. The teams provided onlookers with an entertaining final with the teams tied at a goal a piece mid-way through the final frame before the Chamandy team scored a couple of quick goals en route to a 4-1 win and the gold medal while relegating the Mews team as silver medalists.

In the U14 division, the Lightning’s Giordan team advanced to the final against a strong Sunderland Stingerz team that averaged almost nine goals a game during round robin play. The Lightning posted wins over Markham 8-3, and Whitby 3-2 for the opportunity to exact revenge for the 9-2 drubbing the Stingerz handed the Lightning during round robin action.  The Lighting came up short in their quest as the Stingerz took the final 5-2 to send the Lightning home as silver medalists.

In U16 action, the Lightning’s Thompson team took an undefeated 2-0-1 record into the final against the Pickering Shooting Stars who sported an identical record thanks to these two teams opening the tournament with a 3-3 tie. In that first meeting, Pickering jumped into an early 2-0 lead before the Lightning came back to take the lead 3-2. However, Pickering scored a late goal to get the tie. In the final, Pickering again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Lightning came back again to take the lead 3-2 before extending the lead to 4-2 thanks to a hat trick from Danielle Pelletier and a single from Alessandra Tuzi. Despite the Lightning holding a distinct advantage in shots on net, the score remained 4-2 until Pickering scored with just under 5 minutes to play to pull within a goal. The Lightning thought they had restored a two-goal lead when Kylie Thompson lofted a bouncer on net from outside the blue line; however the referee ruled that the ring had not completely crossed the goal line. Pickering tied the score at 4-4 when the ring deflected in off a Lightning defender with less than 3 minutes to play and then took a 5-4 lead with 42 seconds remaining. The Lightning forced the Pickering goaltender to make a game saving stop with 6.9 seconds remaining to secure the win and relegate the Lightning as silver medalists.

The Lightning’s U9-Applebaum entry opened the tourney with a 9-2 loss to the eventual silver medalists from Newmarket. Despite posting the second lowest goals against average, the Lightning did not advance to the medal round after splitting their remaining round robin games with a pair of low scoring games decided by a single goal in each contest.
