U12 Lightning wins Provincial Gold!
Richmond Hill’s U12-Ianni Team took home the gold medal after going undefeated at the 2015 U12 Provincial Event held in Oshawa, Ontario April 9 -12th. This capped off an already successful season where they finished second in the Central Ontario Ringette League (CORL) with 15 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie.
The team opened the tournament with a narrow 2-1 come from behind win over Dorchester when Kaylin Joy tied the score early in the final frame before Camilla Kernohan got the winner with less than 5 minutes remaining. The team followed with a 4-1 win over Timmins with Kernohan opening scoring and Haleigh Beam getting a natural hat trick to complete the Lightning scoring.

The team then embarked upon another come from behind 2-1 victory, this time over the Forest Extreme with Beam continuing to wield the hot hand netting both Lightning goals. Next up was the Nepean Ravens who managed to do something that no other team had been able to do at the tournament, which was to score more than one goal in a game against the Lightning. Unfortunately for the Ravens though, the Lightning had their offence in high gear with Sydney Stabler getting a hat trick while Beam added another pair with singles coming off the sticks of Kailey Howell and Ava Ianni for a 7-2 victory.
The Lightning finished the round robin portion of the tournament with another 2-1 come from behind victory, this time over the Chatham Thunder. Joy evened the score for the Lightning before the end of the first period with Beam netting the only goal in the final frame to give the Lightning the win and a bye to the final.
The final was a rematch with Nepean in a game in which the Lighting took a 2-0 lead into the final frame on goals by Kernohan and Howell. Nepean cut the deficit to 2-1 on a power play early in the final period, but that was as close as it got as Ianni and Beam rounded out the scoring in a Lightning 4-1 win and the gold medal. Haley Zanon posted an incredible 1.17 goals against average to lead all goaltenders with the closest goaltender a full goal against behind with a respectable 2.17 average. While Haley played amazing when called upon, a lot of credit goes to the tight checking of Kyla Ciomyk, Caroline Routledge, Kiana Fraser, Caden Lee, Michaela Peron, and Makayla Nunno who kept the opposition’s opportunities to a minimum.
Congratulations Lightning!
