An all Lightning Final in Waterloo
Submitted By Scott Thompson on Monday, January 18, 2016
Both Richmond Hill U12 Regional Lightning teams advanced to the gold medal final at the Waterloo Winterfest Ringette Tournament this past weekend. The teams took the top two spots after round robin play with the McKnight team going undefeated to finish first while the Harling team finished second with a 3 win, 1 loss record.

In the final, the Harling team was looking to avenge the 6-5 loss they suffered at the hands of the McKnight team but found themselves down 3-0 before the game was 2 minutes old thanks to goals by Jenna Marchand, Emily Tang, and Sabina Roua. Marlee Wilks got the Harling team on the board before Emily Tang restored the three goal lead for the McKnight team.

With 4 seconds remaining in the period, Alexa Togneri scored for the Harling team. The late goal seemed to provide some spark for the Harling team as they started the final frame quickly with Christina Tsiolis scoring one minute in to the period to narrow the deficit to 4-3. However, the McKnight team restored their two goal lead when Sabina Roua scored her second goal of the game.

Undeterred, the Harling team continued to play hard and narrowed the score to 5-4 when Jayden Balilti scored with just under 5 minutes remaining. With 1:40 remaining, Alexa Togneri tied the score at 5-5 to force overtime. The Harling team started overtime on the power play which they used to their full advantage as Michelle Pham netted the overtime winner 2 seconds after the penalty expired to give the Harling Team the gold medal and relegate the McKnight team as silver medalists.

U14A-Chamandy wins Silver

Also playing in Waterloo, the U14A-Chamandy Lightning team finished second overall after round robin play with a 3 win, 1 loss record. The Lightning’s sole loss came at the hands of a very strong Timmins team that went undefeated. In order to get another opportunity against Timmins, the Lightning needed to get past a pesky Burlington squad in a semi-final. With the Lightning holding a slim 2-1 lead, Burlington scored with under 2 minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime. It was looking like the two teams were going to go to double overtime until Saveena Jandoo netted the winner with 1:17 left on the clock to give the Lightning a berth into the gold medal final. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much left in the tank as Timmins cruised to an 8-3 victory over the Lightning in securing gold.

The U16A-Roman squad failed to advance in their division despite posting the second best goals against average with a 1 win, 1 tie, and 2 loss record.

Lucky 7 for U9-Price team

In other ringette action, the U9 Lightning scored 7 goals in a pair of weekend victories as they defeated the Barrie Blizzard 7-0 and the Oshawa Storm 7-1.

U10-Ianni/Weaver Weekend Warriors

In other ringette action, the U10 Lightning won a pair of weekend games with a narrow 7-6 victory over the Burlington Blast at home before putting together a solid 8-5 road victory over a previously undefeated Paris-Purbrick team. Meghan Cizmar stood on her head in net, while the defense of Quinn Mortensen, Sophia Laliberte, Angelina DiTacchio, Vanessa Kernohan and Sophia Damien put up a wall in front of her. Agnes Laliberte was on fire as she potted 4 goals, followed by Isabel Ianni with a hat trick and Hannah Weaver tossing in a goal for good measure.  Some excellent assists came from Zoey Sconci and Mia Leroux, while Shannon Braund dug in the corners and created some great turnovers.

The U12P-Ianni team split a pair of weekend games, besting Burlington 10-2 with Camilla Kernohan and Taryn Joy leading the attack with both netting hat tricks in the contest. The team could have used some of that offence the following day as they were shutout by The Whitby Wild 8-0.

The U14AA-West team also split a pair of weekend games, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Nepean Ravens before besting the Whitby Wild 5-4.

The U16B-Thompson team relied heavily on the goaltending of Jordan Ho in a 3-1 victory over the Pickering Stars. Madelin Gennaro, Lina Kohandani and Jasmine Hamilton scored for the Lightning. The following day the Lightning mauled the Markham Bears 10-3

The U19A-File team played the Ayr Ice Cats to a 4-4 tie while the Open-A Lightning got past the Brock Badgers 7-4 thanks to a hat trick from Sarah Esmail and Courtney Gibson chipping in with a pair of goals.
