Gold and two Silver for Lightning teams!
The U12P-Harling team went undefeated in
capturing Gold in the London/Dorchester Ringette Tournament on the Nov 11-13
weekend. After outscoring their opponents 24-7 through four round robin games,
the Lightning was pitted against a strong Elora-Fergus squad that also
outscored their opponents 24-7 during RR action.
The final saw the Lightning jumping into an early 2-0 lead but were tied at 3 going into the second half where the Lightning broke the game open by scoring three goals in a span of 2 minutes and 32 seconds en route to a 6-3 win and the gold. Taryn Joy led all scorers with 16 points; Victoria Lee was fourth overall with 12; followed closely by Makayla Nunno and Alexia Himelfarb tied for fifth with 11.
In the U19AA division, the Lightning’s Lee team advanced to the final with the best ‘goals for’ and second best ‘goals against’. They were up against a strong Guelph team that posted the best ‘goals against’ and had the second best ‘goals for’ record. In the final, Guelph got out to a great start taking a 4-1 lead into the final frame. The Lightning cut the deficit to 4-2 but that was as close as they got as Guelph skated to a 5-2 win in relegating the Lightning as silver medalists.
In the U19A division, the Lightning’s West team advanced to the final for a rematch against a strong Forest squad that defeated the Lightning 5-3 during round robin action. It was looking like the Lightning might exact some revenge when they opened the scoring in the second half of the final, but Forest tied the score a mere 18 seconds later. Forest then took a 2-1 lead on a power play a few minutes later, but the Lightning got a power play goal of their own to knot the score at 2. Penalties continued to be a factor as Forest scored with 1:31 remaining while two Lightning players were in the penalty box as Forest held on for a 3-2 win to send another Lightning team home as silver medalists.
Playing in the top tier 18+ Jacks division, the Lightning’s Sandercock team finished fourth after round robin play with a 2-2 record to advance to the semi-finals where they faced a strong Toronto team that held the stingiest goals against record. The Lightning found that goals were hard to come by as they dropped a 7-1 decision in the semi.
In the U19 regional division, the Lightning’s Thompson team posted the second best goals against average, but couldn’t get any offense going scoring only five goals in three round robin games. Despite the low output they still had a chance to advance to the medal match with a win in their final round robin game. Tied at 2-2 with time running down, the Lightning pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the offensive zone; unfortunately an empty net goal with 1:12 remaining dashed any hopes of their advancing.
In the U16A division, the Lightning’s West/Lee team played well in every game and often led or was tied midway through each contest. Unfortunately, when the final buzzer sounded the Lightning found that they were on the wrong end of the score each time.
