2017-18 Provincial - U14A - Harling - U14A Harling “Mines” Silver in Newmarket
Submitted By Bruce Wiseman on Saturday, February 24, 2018
Across the three-day annual Newmarket Ignite the Ice Tournament in Newmarket this past February 16th thru 18th, U14A Harling earned the Silver medal in a strong six-team U14A division.

This was the team's fifth tournament of the season and they were up against some tough first-time competition.  It was a rocky road that would lead them all the way to the Medal Game with the prospect of facing the tournament-undefeated Kitchener team.

The Friday games, at the beautiful Magna Centre, included a match up against the Kitchener team followed by a game versus St. Marys. The U14A Harling team came away with one loss and one victory this day.

Learning from their mistakes from the Friday games, our girls looked to get fully back on track for the Saturday games.  Facing hosts Newmarket and the Elora Fergus team, our girls played “their game, their way” with two victories while outscoring their opponents 16-6.

At the end of the round robin phase, the U14A Harling team found themselves in second place and would have to play third place Elora Fergus again in a Semi-Final for the right to move on to the Finals.

And it wouldn’t be easy.  Sunday morning and the Elora Fergus team was bent on redemption after losing to our girls the previous day.  Adding to the challenge, our girls reverted to their sometime habit of a sluggish start and the scoring went back and forth all game long.  Regulation time ended with a 3-3 draw.  It would take an intense overtime and a hard-fought goal in the ninth minute of OT for the U14A Harling team to put the game away - and gain a ticket to the Finals against Kitchener later that day!

The Finals.  Having learned a thing or two from their previous match-up during the round robin phase, our girls came out to play and put everything they had into cracking the juggernaut that is the Kitchener team.  After one period of play, the score was in favour of Kitchener but the game was not out of reach for a turn-around.  Our girls fought valiantly but weren't able to consistently play the game style that has made them such a success this season.  The game ended with a win by the very skilled Kitchener team. Regardless, the U14A Harling girls should hold their heads up high at their well-deserved silver medal finish!
