Provincial - U14A - Weaver - Silver Lining for RHRA U14A in Pickering!
Submitted By Miriam Weaver on Monday, December 3, 2018
The RHRA U14A team participated in the 50th Anniversary Pickering Tournament on November 30 – December 2, 2018. After a great outing in the London tournament in November but coming just short of advancing to the finals, the girls were hungry in their quest for victory.

It’s never an easy path facing your peers from around Ontario, but with a Quebec AA team in the division as well, we knew that it was going to be a tough route to the finish line.

The RHRA U14A squad challenged themselves all weekend, worked for it, and surprised themselves along the way.  They went beyond limits all weekend working hard as a team and playing with their hearts in every single game!

Our first game of the weekend saw us facing Whitby.  Whitby came out and scored first and that sparked an energy within each player on the team.  They pushed themselves and fought back to take the lead with a final score of 9-1.

Our second game of the weekend was against a mighty Metcalfe team that kept us busy on the ice, but our defense and goalie wouldn’t allow anything and walked away with a shut-out win of 4-0.

Saturday the girls got to sleep in for a bit ahead of facing the strongest opponent in the division – the Four Cites AA team from Quebec.  Going into this game just like us, Quebec was undefeated shutting out both teams they faced on Friday.  But the girls were up for the challenge.  The coaches prepared them and told them that they would be facing the toughest competition they have seen so far – and that they had to put everything they had out there on the ice and never look back! In just under 3 minutes into the game Richmond Hill scored first and the crowd went wild!  Less then a minute later Richmond Hill would score again, and you could just feel the energy that the team had.  It was electrifying!  The girls were always on top of the AA squad in this game and fought so hard right until the end.  With Quebec pulling their goalie with two minutes left in the game they would score a tying goal but the satisfaction and pride that the players, coaches and parents walked away with was incredible!

In the final round robin game, the team faced another quick team from West Ottawa.  But the girls weren’t going to let that deter them.  They fought hard again and earned another shut out victory for our goalie with a final score of 4-0.

When all was said and done the RHRA U14A team completed their round robin undefeated and placing first in the division! An incredible accomplishment with what they had to face!

Sunday morning the girls skated onto the ice for their Semi-Finals against Waterloo.  They had faced them before in the London tournament and Waterloo came out with a game scoring first within the first 5 minutes.  That motivated the girls and they dug deep within themselves and quickly answered.  Waterloo went up by one goal shortly after the second period began but Richmond Hill tied it up with five minutes left.  Then they found the fire within them and scored a game winner and another insurance goal. The crowd went wild – the parents, families and coaches were so proud of this accomplishment!  The girls were going to the finals against the Quebec AA team!

Later that day the girls got on the ice for their final game.  Regardless of the outcome everyone was so proud of them and all that they had accomplished together! The first period was intense, and the girls worked so hard against a tough squad to end the first period with no score on either side!  Shortly into the second period Quebec would score their first goal.  Two minutes later Richmond Hill would answer and tie the game up.  In the end Quebec would score the game winner to take the game with a final score of 2-1.

The girls received their silver medals with smiles on their faces proud of what they had worked so hard for this weekend! They went above and beyond all weekend long and challenged themselves against an AA team.  The girls received such praise from the coaches of the AA team as they thought the girls were a fantastic team and gave them quite a run for their money all weekend long.

The coaches and families couldn’t be prouder.  This weekend was such great competition for the squad and we can’t wait to see how they continue to grow stronger and challenge themselves in the next tournament!

GO LIGHTNING GO!!
