Submitted By Miriam Weaver on Monday, January 7, 2019
The Richmond Hill Lightning U14A team competed in the Whitby Ringette Associations 50th Anniversary Tournament on January 4-6, 2019.

The team knew this would be a tough tournament as their division would see them face some of the best teams in the Province.

The girls started off their weekend playing a team they are familiar with - Whitby.  The girls battled and were successful taking the win with a final score of 6-2.

Our second game of the day saw us face Dorchester which was a team we had not yet played this season.  Dorchester came out strong but the team was able to hold them to just 1 goal, winning with a final score of 4-1.

On Saturday morning at the crack of dawn the girls got ready to face West Ferris.  The coaches and girls had been waiting for this challenge! At the half the girls were down 0-3.  The second half was incredible!! The girls dug deep and came back to score 6 goals and even at one point had taken the lead.  In the end the team was handed their first loss in round robin play with a final score of 6-7.

Our last round robin would see the team face Forest, another very strong team. For both squads, a win would see them move on to the finals.  A loss would mean the end of the road in this tournament.  The girls knew what they had to do and they went out there and did just that!  This game was thrilling for the crowd and the girls walked away with a win and a final score of 3-1.  A ticket to the finals was earned!

On Sunday morning the girls got on the ice for the Finals to face West Ferris.  The girls absolutely dominated the first period and scored the first goal of the game with just over one minute remaining in the first period.  West Ferris would start off the second period and score a goal to tie things up, and follow up with a goal that would eventually be the game winner.  As the coach of West Ferris said to our girls during the medal ceremony – to go from a game with a score of 6-7 to a game with a score of 1-2 is incredible.

This team should be so proud of how far they have come!  They have proven that they can compete with the best amongst the Province.  The coaching staff and parents are so excited for the rest of the season and what is in store! Go Lightning!
