Gold & Bronze at Second Provincial Championship
Submitted By Miriam Weaver on Wednesday, March 20, 2019
Five Lightning teams travelled to North Bay on March 14-17th for the Second Provincial Championship Event - U14A Weaver, U14AA Harling, U16A Chamandy, U19A Collins and U19A West.

U14A Weaver

The U14A Weaver team finished in first place in the division after round robin play posting a 5-1-0 record. The semi-finals would see them face Waterloo, a team they had defeated in round robin play, but the semi-finals would be a much closer affair.  After taking a 4-0 lead with goals scored by Eva Long, Meghan Cizmar, Hannah Weaver and Keira MacLean, Waterloo stormed back and scored three goals to come within one with just under a minute of play left.  The U14A girls hung on though and solidified themselves an entry into the gold medal game!

In the final game the U14A team would face Dorchester again, a team they had also defeated in round robin play.  Dorchester would start off the scoring shortly into the first period.  Hannah Weaver would match that goal to make it 1-1, followed by another goal from Alexia Himelfarb to place the Lightning up by one.  Dorchester would quickly tie it again and at the end of the first period the teams were tied 2-2.  The Lighting would finish the job off with two more goals from Hannah Weaver and another goal from Alexia Himelfarb for a final score of 5-2 and crowning them as Gold Medalists in the U14A McCarthy Division.

The U14A Weaver squad played an all around fantastic tournament with their defense and goalie holding teams to the fewest amount of goals scored in their division.

Zoey Sconci would finish as the top ranked goalie in the division, allowing just 17 goals against in 8 games played.

U16A Chamandy

The U16A Chamandy team finished in second place after round robin play posting a 3-1-2 record.  This got them an entry into the semifinals where they would face Dorchester, a team they had defeated in round robin play.  After the first period ended both teams were tied 2-2 with goals scored by Caelynn Wiseman and Diana Chaves.  Richmond Hill would take the lead by one halfway through the second period with a goal scored by Juliana Cozza, but Dorchester would tie things up with just over 2 minutes left in play.  Shortly after Dorchester would score again and relegate the Lightning to Bronze Medalists in the U16A McCarthy Division.

Diana Chaves and Serena Saltarelli would finish tied in 6th overall in the division with 11 points each.

U14AA Harling

The U14AA Harling team finished in first place after going undefeated in round robin play!  In the semifinals the Harling team would face a tough squad from GCRA who they had defeated in round robin play.  At the half GCRA was leading 4-0.  Richmond Hill would score two goals in the second period from Taryn Joy and Victoria Lee but GCRA would hang on for the win with a final score of 5-2.  In the Bronze Medal Game later that day Richmond Hill would face Waterloo which they had not played in round robin.  Regulation ended with a 3-3 tie and goals scored by Makayla Nunno, Miranda Anderson and Victoria Lee.  In the third period Richmond Hill would have two players in the penalty box and Waterloo would quickly score in OT and take the win.

Makayla Nunno would finish second overall in the division with 18 points, and Riley Hamilton and McKenna Kingsley would finish third overall as goalies allowing 19 goals against in 8 games played.

U19A Collins

The Collins team came out on day one with a tie and one loss.  They looked to rebound on day two with a solid win over the host West Ferris, but dropped a close one later that day to the RHRA U19A West squad.  On the final day of round robin the Collins team would take two losses which meant that they wouldn’t be moving on to Sunday.

The team finished round robin play with a 1-4-1 record, placing 6th overall.  Goalie Elena Gamm finished tied in third overall as goalie with 19 goals against in 6 games.

U19A West

The West team started off day one with a tie against the host team and a tie against Timmins.  On day two they dropped one and took a win from the RHRA U19A Collins squad.  They looked to rebound on the final day of round robin but unfortunately were handed two losses.

The team finished round robin play with a 2-2-2 record, placing 5th overall.  Goalie Daniela Sokolova finished tied in third overall as goalie with 19 goals against in 6 games.
