2018 U12P Champions - Brown Division

The U12P Ianni team travelled to Waterloo to participate in their biggest tournament of the season - the U12 Provincial Championships being held on March 1-4, 2018 where 28 teams would be competing from across Ontario. After a very strong season the team was placed in the top tier Brown Division where the girls would face some tough competition.

On Thursday the opening day, the team faced an opponent from our own division – Ajax. It was a close one but the girls came out with a 3-2 win and secured their first win.

Later that day the team headed out to the opening ceremonies where the girls were decked out in their “Rey” costumes from Star Wars. The girls looked incredible thanks to all of the moms helping the girls perfect their look!

Day two saw the girls completely bring their A game to the table!

They would first face off against Dorchester in a game where RH dominated the play and secured their second win.

In the afternoon the nerves were there knowing we would be facing West Ottawa which was one of the only teams in Ontario that the girls had not yet been successful at capturing a win against.

The level of intensity the girls brought to this game was again simply incredible. At the halfway mark RH was leading with a score of 1-0. In the second period the girls ramped it up ending the game with a final score of 4-1 and lots of cheers and screams from the ice and in the stands.

In their fourth game on Saturday morning the team saw themselves facing a score of 2-4 with about five minutes left of play. This team never has any quit which they proved again during this day to come back and win the game with a score of 5-4, and the winning goal being scored with less than 4 seconds left in play! With this win we knew we had done something special. The U12P Ianni team had just solidified a bye to finals and would be competing for gold in the highest division of the U12 Provincial event! The parents, players and coaches were ecstatic!

But we still had one more round robin to play against Whitby, which was a game that our opponent fought hard to try and get the win they needed in order to move on. The girls ended the game with a tie of 5-5 and had just accomplished going undefeated in round robin

On the Saturday night the team went out together and had dinner at a local restaurant, followed by their daily coaches/players meeting and then hanging out for a little bit before hitting the pillow ahead of a very big game.

On Sunday morning after breakfast the players and coaches had their final meeting and team walk. There was some nervousness in the air amongst the girls and parents. The girls knew what they had to do though – this was it – they had to lay it all out there on the ice. And they did just that. The gold medal game was simply electric!!

The atmosphere was incredible, breathtaking, and nerve wracking all at once! West Ottawa got the first goal in to make it 1-0 but a couple minutes later RH tied it up. RH scored another goal in the second period with 4 minutes remaining to make it 2-1. West Ottawa quickly tied it up around 30 seconds later. Regulation ended and we were then going into overtime.

The girls dominated OT and had a ton of shots on net. Finally, with 2:05 remaining RH scored!!!

The arena literally erupted with the players rushing down the ice to their goalie and a huge group hug pile up!

The parents and coaches were jumping up and down with joy and tears, and the pride couldn’t have been any clearer on anyone's faces.

The girls and the parents knew what they had just done – they had made history for themselves and the Richmond Hill Ringette Association doing what no U12P team has ever done before!! The U12P Ianni team just became the first Richmond Hill team to ever have won gold in the top tier at U12 Provincials and officially take the top spot in Ontario!

This was a season none of us will ever forget and what a way to finish it! Congratulations players, parents and coaches on an incredible season!

And a special Thank you to Johanne Guignard for pictures!
