U12-Harling: Gold Medal winners at the 29th Annual Richmond Hill Ringette Association’s Ringette Tournament!
Submitted By Caelynn Wiseman on Monday, February 8, 2016
Over February 4th thru 7th 2016, the U12-Harling team won all four games and took the Gold Medal in the U12 Regional division of the RHRA’s annual tournament.

Confidence was high, coming off a Gold Medal performance at the Waterloo Invitational Ringette tournament two weeks earlier, and the girls had not lost any games since then. The first game of this tournament was to be played on the Thursday evening against the unrelenting Brian McKnight team - also from Richmond Hill. Our girls came out strong and clashed evenly with the McKnight team so that, at the Half, the score was tied 2-2. But it was as though the 2nd period was a completely different game as our girls stepped up their play and scored six more goals, knowing that Ashley was backstopping the team well. The final score for game #1 was an 8-4 victory.

The next afternoon saw our girls face off against the physically larger team from Barrie. But our girls had a belief about them; a belief that they “could do this”. And “do this” they did! Making great passing plays and utilizing their speed, our girls proved to one another and to all in attendance that they were here to go all the way. With the help of a strong defense, the game #2 ended in a 9-0 win and a shutout for Ashley!

On Saturday, game #3 was to be played at the Honda rink at the Magna Centre in Newmarket due to rink availability for the tournament. The opponents would be a team from St. Marys; a team our girls had yet to play this season. This game would be almost a carbon copy of the previous game with our girls dominating the play. There were a few key differences. The St Marys team was less physical, but quicker, than the Barrie team and if it weren’t for their dynamo of a goalie, our girls may have come away from this game with an even higher final score. The game #3 result: another 9-0 win and another shutout for Ashley!

The U12-Harling team had not only made a clean sweep of the round-robin phase of the tournament, but they had won a 1st place berth in the Finals on Sunday.

It was five minutes before eleven on the morning of Sunday, February the 7th. As the Zamboni circled the rink at Tom Graham Arena, clearing and preparing the ice for the Medal Game that would soon begin between the Harling and McKnight teams, a speech was in progress. The words began slowly, pausing for effect or perhaps for a breath of air; Coach Ian laid out his message and his plan for the game that would begin shortly. Like many of his previous speeches, few remembered his exact words but none would forget the message. When the echoes of the team cheer had died down in the change room, the girls headed to the rink, knowing what needed to be done.

The seating area was almost fully packed with supporters from both teams, and interested fans, in attendance. As in the previous meeting between these two teams, they both came out strong and battled evenly.  Yet, despite our girls being assessed with three penalties, it was another tied game; 4-4 at the Half.  And then it happened; Ashley, and our defense, shut the door allowing our offence to stay focused and play cohesively. With smart plays and passing, our girls netted four more goals by the time the final buzzer sounded.   It was a great game and a Gold Medal performance by the U12-Harling team!

Of special note were Ashley’s two shutouts and the U12-Harling team providing the top five point scorers (Caelynn, Jayden, Christina, Alexa and Ashelle) for this Division!

Congratulations Team!
